Editor's
Introduction
IN
TRADITIONAL COMPILATIONS of the Upanishads, this one
usually appears first.
It
constitutes the fortieth chapter of the Vajasaneyi Samhita
of the White Yajurveda. Since it is the only Upanishad
taken wholly from a Vedic Samhita, it is sometimes called
the "Samhita Upanishad."
Like
the Kena Upanishad, the Isa Upanishad
takes its name from its first word, Isa, meaning
"by the Lord."
The
Text
This
translation was made by F. Max Müller, a famous
nineteenth-century Sanskrit scholar. We have copied
it from The Sacred Books of the East, Volume
I, published in 1879. The copyright has expired.
The
notes are by me.
