Forty
Verses On Reality

SRI RAMANA MAHARSHI

EDITOR'S
INTRODUCTION
THIS IS MY FAVORITE work of Ramana's. It strikes me
as the most complete, the deepest, and the most tersely
expressed.
I
especially like verse 29, which contains a remarkable
short description of the method of self-enquiry, because
it makes clear that when you focus your attention on
"I," you shouldn't think of I.
The
original, composed in classical Tamil, is called Ulladu
Narpadu.
Ramana
himself translated this poem into Telugu and Malayalam,
suggesting that he also thought it was special.
This
English translation was made by Arthur Osborne. We have
reprinted it by permission from the October1964 issue
of the Mountain Path Journal published by Sri Ramanasramam.
