Editor's
Introduction
THIS
BOOK is the oldest known instruction manual on yoga.
Its title means "Short Statements About Yoga."
It describes a system known variously as Classical Yoga,
Patanjali Yoga, Ashtanga (Eight-limbed) Yoga, and Raja
Yoga.
The translation we present here has been pieced together
with some editorial changes from several previous versions.
In drawing on a multiplicity of sources, we have taken
care not to introduce any inconsistencies in terminology.
We have probably relied most heavily on the excellent
translation by Samkhya-Yogacharya Swami Hariharananda
Aranya which was published by Calcutta University Press.
There are many other excellent English translations
in print including those by Georg Feuerstein and Swami
Vivekananda.
